The letter started off by address the President. “Dear Mr. President, while doing the job that I was trained to do in the ER, I had the pleasure of evaluating a female patient that flaunted some of the more flashy perks of life in the United States of America. A expensive shiny gold tooth, some very expensive body tattoos and tennis shoes while socializing on a new cell phone with the latest R&B hit ring tone.
“Medicaid” of all things, was listed as the payer for these health services I performed in the ER and that really caught my attention. Further examination revealed, by her own admission that she is a pack a day smoker, uses the fast-food take-out for all meals and snacks and pays cash for beer and pretzels privileges any time she chooses. Let me make sure I clearly understand that this is the health care you and our Congress want to unload in my plate?
I absolutely know that our nation’s “health care crisis” is not the result of what you would have me believe; a shortage of quality hospitals, doctors or nurses. It is however, the result of a “culture crisis”. This crisis insists that luxuries and vices are far more important that taking care of ones own health or purchasing health insurance. Yes, I am aware of the responsibility and accountability that this would require of individuals. This “culture crisis” rewards bad personal health choices and promotes dependency on other entities to take care of us while feeding a “I can do what ever I want to” mentality. By honestly addressing the “culture crisis”, you will be amazed at how quickly the “health care crisis” will be fixed. Respectfully, ROGER STARNER JONES, MD”.
It raises some very serious issues of insurability and although this is not to say that there are people right now who are working hard to try and maintain health insurance and support their families we need to really wonder if we won’t be carrying a lot of dead weight with this new health insurance plan. Perhaps it is not the right of every person to have a health care plan that is subsidized by the U.S. government and the American Public?
